RE: Resorts near St. Augustine

We love North Beach. We had a pull thru site that must have been 75 feet long. Plus, it is just pretty and the ocean is just across the road. One year we stayed at the KOA in St. Augustine. Very tight and no privacy, but convenient to everything....kind of pricey too. The staff was great there, but still, not worth giving up North Beach for.

RE: Heavenly Acres Campground, Stanardsville, Va.

We live really nearby and thought we'd spend one night there with our granddaughter. People are nice, campground is not much at all. The sites are pretty dismal and most of the sites are filled with out of the area workers. The campground needs a lot of work and pretty junky around the owner's home, which is near the office. Linda

RE: Thanks for Charlottesville cg suggestion

Kathy, Glad you like the campground. Just make sure you take in all the great places to see and things to do in the Charlottesville area. Even though we have lived in the area for over 30 years, it still amazes me, especially Charlottesville itself. Have a great stay. Linda

RE: Campground for Christmas

Stretching the 400 mile range, but maybe worth it, is Nashville. Visit the Opryland Hotel and make it a long day. Fabulous.

RE: Help us find a Florida campground...

Two posts were correct. The Space Center is amazing. We stayed at a campground several years ago in Rockledge, not too far away. One of our favorite places is North Beach outside St. Augustine. Worth the visit to St. Augustine and the beach is wonderful. Linda

RE: Marathon Florida-campgrounds

We love Knights Key! Spent a week or more there for several years in Jan. Had an ocean site for 2 years and then without making a reservation, took the "infield" site for another 2 years. The tiki bar at sunset is a must, take the bicycles and ride out on the old bridge to tour Pigeon Key Museum, or take the conch train right there at Knights Key. You will enjoy the place I am sure. RE: Mt. Dora, Eustis or Tavares, FL.

We have not visited recently, guess it was about 4 years ago when last there. We love Mt. Dora and stayed for 3 nights at Holiday RV Park in Leesburg. We liked that campground a lot. There were park models and a lot of snow birds, all friendly and a very active park. Two heated pools, one indoor, tons of activities even though we did not participate in any.

RE: MASTERS - Camping Near Augusta National

A few years back we spent 2 nights at Mistletoe St. Park in Appling. It was great. Very clean and neat. Loved touring around Augusta. Linda

RE: Maine to Florida

Harpers Ferry, WVA, Shenandoah National Park & Skyline Drive, Shenandoah Valley and stop at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton (several good campgrounds in the Valley), Charlottesville VA - Monticello, Ash Lawn, the University of VA.,Montpelier in Orange Co., completing the major renovation of James Madison's home. If you venture east, Richmond is good and then Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. On the coast of SC - tons of places on Rt. 17 - Murrell's Inlet, just s. of Myrtle Beach and Huntington Beach St. Park, Charleston, SC, Savannah GA, Jekyll Is. GA, St. Augustine or Fernandina Beach and Amelia Is., FL. Linda

RE: CG suggestions for Charlottesville, VA area?

South of Charlottesville will be less traffic, so I'd also vote for the KOA. The place is a madhouse during football season though, so you'd better make the reservations now. Although we've never stayed at Misty Mtn., there are a lot of people with positive reviews. We've been at the KOA several times. Really did not care for the 340 North though. There is a small campground in Greene County called Heavenly Acres. It is about 8 miles west of Rt. 29 on Rt. 230 and I've never been in there, nor heard anything one way or another. Good luck. Linda

RE: knight's campground

I've never heard of Knight's Kampground on Key Largo. There is a Knight's Key RV Park at Marathon. Can that be the one? If so, we have loved it for many trips.

RE: New 5'er and looking to get away...

Welcome to the forum! You will gain a huge amount of information on this particular section of the forum, from campgrounds and great places to see and eat! We have met some of the members while on the road, as well as keeping in touch through emails. Have a great time in your new camper. Hopefully, we will be able to retire before too long and see your "neck of the woods" one day. Linda

RE: Charlottesville,VA T.Jefferson Home

We've found the pull thru sites at the KOA more than adequate. If you are doing lots of tourist type things, you won't be at the campground but to sleep. Ditto on Michie Tavern - while there be sure to visit the University of VA. Jefferson created this and his stamp is ever present. The serpentine wall and gardens, the Rotunda and the Lawn are beautiful. Great places to eat and shop on the downtown mall. Linda

RE: Central Virgina

I agree with the last post. The Charlottesville KOA, just south of the city, would not be too terribly far to get to Bedford. Montpelier is in Orange County, and staying too far outside Charlottesville will make it much too long. Take the toad! Monticello, Ash Lawn and the Michie Tavern are all near each other, but still the toad will make it much more pleasant and affordable.

RE: Shenandoah

On the south end, some private campgrounds might be fine - Staunton/Verona KOA has a fishing pond, lots of activities, tubing down the river. Harrisonburg/New Market KOA is way off of I-81 but does have a pond. We've never had any luck at any of the ponds at either park. We've not stayed at Misty Mountain C.G. in Crozet, but it is convenient to Skyline Drive, just outside of Charlottesville and there are tons of things to see and do in Charlottesville. As stated, there are no real sources of water on Skyline Drive, but there are many wonderful natural areas for hiking, etc.

RE: East Coast Trip

Some of our favorite places: Brunswick, GA & Jekyll Island (good campground on the island) Savannah, GA - take one of the train tours to see stuff you would not. we stayed at Savannah Oaks Campground If you take the coastal road (Rt. 17), tons of neat places - we liked Beaufort, SC - beautiful antebellum homes and a revitalized water front and Main St. The coast of both North and South Carolina - a must is Charleston. Come to Virginia - Shenandoah National Park, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, Charlottesville and vicinity. It is filled with history and the Shenandoah National Park is filled with beauty.

RE: Finally we arrived at Charleston SC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many years ago we had wonderful oysters at Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant. Also, go to the fort on Sullivan's Island if you have time. If not, there are other things more important. It is a fabulous place, enjoy!

RE: 25th Wedding Anniversary - Where to Go On East Coast

If she is a resort person, she will not like Huntington Beach State Park. No pools, but lovely beach and funky coastal town of Murrell's Inlet is great, but resortlike...no! If you've never seen the southern cities of Charleston and Savannah, that would be a must see on the way down or back home. They are gorgeous! Food is great too. Happy anniversary! We just celebrated our 44th. Linda

RE: recommending sites to see!!!

We live just east of the national park and in our opinion the prettiest part of the park is the north end. We usually go up onto the Skyline Drive at the intersection of Rt. 33 and drive north and sometimes will go to the end, other times we will get off at Rt. 211. Route 11 on the west side has quaint little towns and interesting places to see, Harrisonburg being one of the larger towns. There are a number of campgrounds on the west side of the national park, off of I-81. Sadly, the government took more from our county to create the park and we did not even get an entrance!

RE: Trip Planning..need suggestions!!

There are a lot of places near Williamsburg, we have stayed at two. One was the Pottery and the other was the Colonial KOA. Of the two, the KOA was better, but just barely. The website, rvparkreviews.com will give you plenty of ratings and opinions. The campgrounds are not as big of a deal, since the big draw is Williamsburg. We love the historic area and rode our bikes all through the area. While you are there, visit Jamestown and Yorktown - great for your kids to tie in US History! The only campground we've been to in the Richmond area is not near the highway at all. Enjoy your trip.
